2D Versus 3D Mammogram Technology

3D mammogram technology is cutting down on patients being called back for more imaging and exams.

Dr. Brandon Hicks from North Arkansas Regional Medical Center (NARMC) Imaging Services joined KHOZ’s Around The Table on Tuesday to discuss Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Hicks is a radiologist and is responsible for reading “all imaging studies.” He said he reads mammograms and ultrasounds. Hicks takes part in initial diagnosis and screening.

Hicks said the new 3D imaging technology has been in the works for many years. “It actually reconstructs the breast to a certain degree” allowing it to be looked through almost like a 3D structure. He said 2D images show overlapping breast tissue displaying spots that are not real. This new technology cuts down on patients being called back for new images.
